Television programming this season has left me yawning. For astonishing footwork and plenty of leg exposure, ABC delivers Dancing with the Stars. And if that doesn’t suit your Samba, there’s always Skating with Celebrities.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not all that enamored with superstars. And even if I were, I don’t think I’d find anything astonishing about a bunch of actors learning how to dance and skate. Frequently, these folks have to acquire new skills for their character roles. So they’re just doing what they’ve always been paid to do. And we’re setting there oo-oo-ing and ah-ah-ing (except for that guffaw you can’t help when they fall down and go boo-boo) like that’s something special.

To me, it’d be more entertaining to watch programs like Toilet Scrubbing with Top Models. Or maybe Laundry with the Soap Stars. How about Mopping Floors with the Rich & Famous? Better still, I’d love to see Cooking with Desperate Housewives–especially if Terri Hatcher were forced to eat every morsel of an 8-ounce steak, a cup of creamed potatoes with gravy, and a big ol’ slice of banana cream thigh, I mean pie.

Oh, sure. I know what you’re thinking–that I’m envious of all those pretty faces and hot bodies. Well, let me tell you, those guys and gals don’t look that way without a whole lot of help. This was confirmed recently by a Hollywood makeup artist I hired to perform a miracle. (I’d asked her to make me look fantastic for a photo shoot.)

“Honey, those gals don’t really look like that,” she said. “They’ve all been cut on a thousand times.” She waived her eye shadow brush in the air. “Then I get a hold of ‘em . . . and then their photos get touched up after that.”
She reached into her treasure trove of cosmetics and dabbed at my ruddy complexion. Then she gave me a quizzical look. Probably she was confused over finding wrinkles and pimples–on the same face.

She plucked a lone, dark hair from my chin before I could utter, “I didn’t even know that was there!”

Next, she attacked my eyebrows without first asking if this was okay. And then with the kick of her foot, she switched on some kind of compressor. I figured I was about to be sheared like a sheep. But she said she was only going to spray on my foundation. “You get a more finished look this way,” she explained.

After I’d been airbrushed, plucked and penciled to perfection, the makeup lady inserted false hair sprigs between my real lashes. By the time I was on the business end of a camera lens, I must confess I was feeling unnatural yet glamorous. Yet, despite all this effort, I didn’t look like a movie star.

Hollywood standards aren’t achievable through normal means. A good makeup artist and photographer can, however, work wonders. In reality, I don’t look anything like my new photo. Come to think of it, that picture might lead to a TV series for next season–Extreme Writer Makeovers.

Imagine this lifestyle. You walk into a crowd filled with attractive people. Each person you approach looks at you with a seductive stare. Some ask you to call. Some ask for you to dance. In this scenario you are like a Hollywood movie star.

It’s not about saying anything. It’s about saying something that will get the persons attention. My personal favorite is saying something funny. The following are reasons why people don’t laugh.

• The person doesn’t have a sense of humor.

If what you said wasn’t funny, it’ll be easy to notice when all you hear are crickets. If the person doesn’t have a sense of humor, that’s a better thing. It gives you hope that your jokes are actually funny.

If you are looking to improve your social life, being funny is the best option. Your life will improve in more ways than one. I know from experience!

George Jetson used to step into his cylindrical closet each morning and, a few seconds later, step back out in different clothes, as the closet - with Star Trek-style sliding pocket doors - automatically dressed him. His wife Jane talked to their refrigerator, and moments later hot food slid out of a slot in the counter. And, of course, they drove a flying car, which automatically navigated George to work each day - shades of Tom-Tom!

(If you’re too young to remember the Jetsons, they were a cartoon family from the 1960s, created as a futuristic counterpart to the stone-age Flintstones. You can probably catch the show from time to time on The Cartoon Network. The theme song went something like, “Meet George Jetson, Jane, his wife, his daughter, Judy, his boy, Elroy . . .” and they had a white dog that was remarkably like Sony’s recently deceased Aibo robo-pet.)

We haven’t quite reached the point of living like the Jetsons, but we’re getting there, step by step. As for myself, I read the NY Times online each morning, and sometimes I wish I could take it with me when I go to the bathroom - but my laptop is too much hassle to unplug and carry with me, and too heavy to balance on the shelf over the sink. Besides, I always think of bathroom breaks as an opportunity to ESCAPE from being connected: no phone calls, no emails, no C-Span; instead, an opportunity to leaf through a gardening catalogue, read a few pages of a novel, or catch up on this month’s National Geographic.

Full house automation systems can, however, really make life easier for those whose lives are so busy (or whose “wired-ness” is so complete) that they don’t want to lose contact even when they’re in that private haven. There are several simple and low cost security measures that anyone can put in place around their home to greatly enhance their security. And usually it’s a good idea to put some of these common sense measures in place first when you give attention to home security. But after you have done all that you can to reduce the likelihood of someone breaking into your home otherwise, it’s a good idea to start seriously thinking about installing a home security system as well, especially if your budget will allow it.

To start with, an alarm system can just consist of sensors that are placed on all the windows and doors that are connected to a main system. When armed, if any of those sensors detect an opened window or door, it alerts the system which begins a countdown of a set number of seconds for the alarm to be deactivated by the owner if returning home, until it sounds a very loud siren to warn of a possible intrusion. This kind of relatively simple alarm system has been in use and proved to be very effective for many years now.

But advancing technology has made other additions and enhancements available that can improve your security level even further.

For instance, now you can add motion detectors to a security system to make it even more effective. By putting motion sensors inside the home, even if the thief manages to bypass the entry sensors, they will still be caught by their movement inside the home and the alarm will be triggered.

Another increasingly popular option is to connect the alarm system to an outside monitoring service that will determine if an alarm being triggered is a real emergency or just a false alarm, and in the case of a real break-in will report that to local law enforcement. Most of the time the connection with this service has been made through regular phone lines, but recently some companies have started using cellular phone service instead. This eliminates the possibility that someone could cut the phone lines in advance and prevent notification of the alarm service, and it also allows alarm monitoring even when the power is out if the security system uses a backup battery in such situations.

Another increasingly popular addition to home security systems is video surveillance of the outside of the home. The low cost of security cameras has made this kind of option more affordable than most would initially believe. By installing small, discreet cameras at strategic locations outside the home, you can monitor what is going on and even record it if you wish. These cameras can also be connected to motion sensitive devices so that they alert you when movement is detected and can begin recording upon being triggered. There are plenty of things that can be done with video cameras to enhance a home security system, but this should give you a few ideas of what is possible though.

So do you need these added security enhancements? As with many questions involving consumer purchases the answer is maybe. If your budget simply doesn’t allow for them at this point, then a simple alarm system is certainly better than none at all. But if you can afford to install some of the options mentioned above as well, it can be a good investment that helps promote more peace of mind.
