With the introduction of Kindle for PC application by Amazon, another milestone of the digital book revolution is uncovered. From that point, any computer that runs on the Windows software in more than 170 countries around the world can easily access Amazon’s Kindle web pages, browse through the samples and buy digital books that users can read on the same computer. Originally, Kindle books are only accessible through Kindles and iPods. It wouldn’t be long before the Kindle for Mac will also be released in order to complete this trend of global digital book distribution.
The digital book revolution will encounter another significant change when Google opens a digital bookstore next year. There may be a number of digital book systems, and formats in existence but the emergence of this particular virtual bookshop will still affect a number of users. Dubbed, Google Editions, the digital bookstore will allow users to download digital books from a browser to any device as it is hosted on dedicated linux servers. With this, two big corporations: Google and Amazon, will dominate the digital book market.
Because of new technologies, books and the written word has gained instant distribution in a way that is impossible for a physical book. It is no longer limited by gravity so it can get around the planet without the constraints of geography or even language barriers. Digital books can be retrieved from the virtual sky, transmitting thoughts and ideas without destroying natural resources during the process.
Although Google Editions and Amazon has changed the delivery of books and global distribution of literature, the key to their success is still in the content of the books. Content remains to be king. People read these books in order to connect and communicate with their writers. No one reads to feel a connection with the publisher.
