The Benefits of Purchasing Second Hand Computer Hardware

Posted by admin on 14 Mar 2010 | Tagged as: Business, Living With Hardware

These days it is important for most organizations to have internet access, computers have become an enormous expense for every business. This expense is due not just to upfront costs, but also because these items must have regular upgrades, upkeep, and repairs, which often needs to be performed by a professional from outside the organization. Then there is the lost income caused by the down-time and hassle involved. Purchasing refurbished computer hardware and other related items helps businesses to reduce costs, specially new businesses and professionals setting up a business on their own because of the huge outgoings involved. It’s easy to see why the trade in used networking equipment and data storage is flourishing, particularly in today’s economic climate. They can source these items at a fraction of the cost and they’ll run every bit as well if not better than brand new equipment. If you purchase a piece of second-hand equipment, you can be sure it will run precisely as you need it to. Nonetheless finding refurbished equipment that’ll fulfill your remit may occasionally appear to be a labor intensive chore, particularly when you know exactly what you need. When using suppliers who focus on second hand servers and second-hand data storage, they will do most of the work on your behalf. Usually you can ask for a specific manufacturer or model.

Most of the issues with new technologies don’t manifest until the computer hardware has already been introduced. System shutdown for patching and upgrading is routine in the months and weeks following the purchase of brand-new equipment. Occasionally, a new system causes so much hassle that companies simply replace it after an unsuccessful implementation.

This is no longer an issue with second-hand servers and other equipment because they have already been in use for some time. You will not have to waste time sorting out the teething problems often associated with brand new equipment. On top of all that, as each and every piece of computer hardware is carefully checked over before being delivered, there’s no need to be worried over dependability. Choosing experienced suppliers is of paramount importance. Contact a few and find somebody with a good track record. This ensures the units you purchase are working properly. A warranty is also a good idea, in case something goes wrong. For companies that make the choice to forget about the latest networking equipment and invest in used networking equipment, used servers, and used data storage, the benefits will involve more than simply price. So make the effort to check out second hand hardware and, obviously, your best IT financing options when you are looking for brand new hardware.

Emergency Response VSAT Internet Communications

Posted by admin on 10 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware

As 2005 begins, there are a number of products on the market which enable Emergency Response Units to have internet connectivity at remote disaster locations. The products marketed this year mount on vehicles from Fire Rescue units to most any type of truck or van, on specially designed trailers utilizing portable generators and in transportable boxes which can be shipped by UPS or Fed X overnight to most any location in the U.S. A response team’s greatest challenge is to know enough about how this mobile satellite internet technology works and what the differences are in quality of transmission based on the equipment chosen and services provided by the Satellite Internet Provider.

To make the right decision at the onset of the process of buying vsat mobile satellite internet equipment will save your Government Agency thousands of dollars in the long run. How do you evaluate what the best combination of equipment and service will be? Here is the process I recommend to the Government Agencies I speak to around the country:

1. Determine what you will need to do on the internet in an emergency.

Will you need to send digital pictures to other locations? Will you need to establish a VPN connection to Headquarters? Will you want to “live stream” a camera over the internet? Do you need telephone capability over the net (VOIP) in a very remote location that has no cell phone connectivity? Do you need to connect multiple computers at the remote site engaged in the above activities or engaged in heavy emailing? All but emailing requires either low latency (1/2 second or less) or fast upload speeds (sustained speeds above 128kbps)…..some of these activities need both!

If you need ANY of these capabilities, you need to look seriously at the Enterprise Class of equipment available today. This is not Direcway or Starband powered equipment! They are fine companies; however, in spite of all they can do, the important fact is: These companies can’t or won’t provide enough upload (in-route) speed or low enough latency to work effectively at the tasks listed above - period!

2. Determine what type of installation will provide your Emergency Response team the most flexibility in an Emergency.

When time is of the essence, you need a mobile setup that can be taken to a disaster site in a hurry and is available at a moments notice to be on it’s way. A self contained vehicle mount is the most popular, in part due to the fact that it was all that was available until 2003 and until recently, the least expensive. Many Government Agencies don’t have the budget to have such a vehicle “sit around” waiting for a disaster. They need to utilize the vehicle all the time and have a legitimate concern that when the need arises, the vehicle won’t be able to get to a location in the time frame needed……what then? Many Government agencies I speak to have recently opted for a trailer mounted system combined with a portable generator or the “transportable” unit which is two or three “boxes” that contain all the gear needed to quickly establish a broadband connection to the internet and can be shipped overnight by Ground Carriers if needed at a distant location. In this scenario, the monthly service is a minimal cost and when the need arises, can be ramped up to whatever speeds are required in a matter of minutes. This can save the Government Agency an enormous amount over the years. It has only been offered by the “big boys” in this business who have figured out how to make money with this type of service by dedicating transponders that handle more accounts than you normally would have as a result of the infrequent use.

The best way to make sure your investment in this equipment is a wise one is to contact an independent provider who can give you a “No Spin” analysis of your situation and recommend the right solution to your organization.

Repairing a Scratched Windshield

Posted by admin on 11 Sep 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware, Road Rage

Replacing or repairing a scratched windscreen can be one of the easiest, or one of the most intimidating, experiences that you can have as a vehicle owner depending on the approach that you take. Windscreen replacement is not an easy process; it involves strength, a stable hand, and a willingness to follow instructions cautiously.

Every car is different, most frequently, removing a windshield requires loosening the urethane that supports it in place, then carefully lifting it out. Once this is done, the leftover urethane must be cleared away with a utility knife to make room for the windscreen replacement. The new windscreen is then glued into place, and enforced with bolts. When replacing a windshield, it is extremely important to ensure that the new urethane seal is put in place the right way, because any outflows can cause wind to enter the vehicle, totally ruining the experience of driving.

If a windshield has a chip, it may be possible to repair it instead of replacing it. Windscreen repair is a considerably easier procedure. Repair kits can be found in nearly every auto parts store, and involves sealing the chip with resin. The resin the clear and does not leave a mark, and once the process is complete, it is virtually impossible to notice that the windscreen was ever chipped. The repair kits can frequently be unreliable for repairing large cracks, however, and can sometimes make the problem worse, needing a replacement. This job is often better left to professionals.

If you decide to let a professional deal with your windshield problems, you may be delighted to find that very often you do not need to bring your car to the garage. Many companies offer mobile repair services, which can be completed in a matter of an hour or less, even if the windshield requires to be replaced entirely. Mobile windscreen repair services are able to perform the service at the comfort of your own home, or at work, making it an extremely convenient one.

Computer Cooling Hardware

Posted by admin on 21 May 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware

PC cooling systems are one of the hottest - and coolest - computer hardware accessories avaliable. Most computers, however, still do not come with a cooling system more advanced than the typical heat sink and cpu fan. Some computers, however, are being sold with liquid cooling systems, such as the Apple G5 Power Mac. The dual processors undoubtedly put out a great deal of excess heat that a simple copper heat sink and fan alone can not properly dissipate. Intel is also getting into the new cooling trend, claiming that it’s newest processors (of the Pentium 4 line) are approximately 20 degrees hotter than any chip currently produced by AMD (Advanced Micro Devices).

Although these new processors all but absolutely require high-end cooling systems, it may not be a bad idea to add an additional cooling system to your 1-3 year old system. Your heatsink and fan can probably handle the heat, but the additional cooling can’t hurt. Here are some popular options if you are looking to add a new cooling system to your computer:

- Water cooling system. Several companies currently offer both external and internal liquid systems that can efficiently cool a wide range of processors, whether you have a P4, or a late AMD processor such as the K7 or K8. Some come with a nifty control panel that shows the processor temperature and speed of the fan.

- Memory cooling system. CPU’s are not the only hardware component that becomes dangerously hot during prolonged computer usage. Your memory cards can also produce a large amount of heat. To combat this, there are memory heat spreaders avaliable to dissipate RAM heat. The aluminum bars attach to the RAM module, providing an outlet for the heat - working much like a CPU heatsink.

- Heavy-duty fan system. Fans are not at all out of the cooling picture. Replacing the ordinary manufactures fan with a custom model can be beneficial to your CPU’s performance. There are many new fan-type cooling systems avaliable, including some that blow air powerfully around the heat sink, much a like a miniture jet engine.

There are quite a lot of options when it comes to properly cooling your PC. The process of setting up just the right cooling system for you can be fun and rewarding. Chances are fairly good that if your computer is less than 3 years old, it could benefit immensly from improved cooling and ventilation.

Webcam - How to Choose

Posted by admin on 18 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware

With the growing availability of high bandwidth internet connections getting a webcam and staying in touch with friends and family has never been easier.

What is a Webcam

A webcam is a small video camera that takes still or moving images and sends them to your PC via a USB cable. The quality of image capture is determined by the webcam’s lens, optical sensor and the frame rate the camera can transmit.

The best available resolution is 640×480 and the frame rate is almost always 30 frames per second. If your looking to take movie clips then you will need a camera with a high resolution and frame rate. If you want to use your video camera for video conferencing, you could go for a cheaper, lower-spec camera but with the ever increasing availability of high bandwidth internet connections and VoIP software such as Skype, I would recommend going for a good quality camera.

PC specification and your Webcam

At this point it would be a good idea to check the minimum specification required to run the webcam of your choice, and whether your PC meets that specification. The majority of current webcams require at least Windows 98 Second Edition to work properly. Minimum processor requirements generally vary from 350MHz to 700MHz but I would suggest a processor speed of at least 1000MHz. RAM specifications vary from 128MB to 512MB. Manufacturers of webcams will generally state a wide compatibility specification, however, a good rule of thumb would be to take the top specification mentioned for your webcam and use that as your minimum specification requirement.

Ok your PC has met the minimum RAM and Processor specification for your webcam, the next thing to think about is the kind of port your webcam is going to plug into. The majority of webcams manufactured in the past five years plugs in to a USB port. However, there are two kinds of USB ports older USB1.1 ports (12Mbit/s) and the more recent USB2.0 ports (480Mbit/s). These two types look identical and you can plug a USB2.0 port into a USB1.1 socket and you can plug older USB1.1 devices into a USB2.0 port, however, only a USB Hi-Speed device on a USB2.0 port will transfer data faster than 12Mbit/s.

Upgrading your PC to meet your webcam requirements

Before you undertake any upgrade, you need to compare your PC’s specifications to the minimum requirements of the webcam you want to install. Check out the need to know below before you take the plunge.

A webcam’s manufacturer will specify certain minimum requirements that your PC should meet if it is to work successfully with the device. These generally include the version of Windows on your PC, your processor’s speed and the amount of RAM fitted.

Some webcams use a USB Hi-Speed connection. Before you buy one of these cams check to see if your PC has USB2.0 ports. If your PC runs a version of Windows older than XP then it almost certainly doesn’t have USB2.0 ports.

Most current webcams come with a built-in microphone, but a few don’t. Before you buy, check to see if your webcam has a microphone, if it doesn’t you’ll have to buy one that plugs into your sound card.

Things to Look for When Buying a Computer Microphone

Posted by admin on 11 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware

Computer microphones are a valuable addition to any PC and they greatly increase interactivity and communication levels. You can use a microphone for performing various tasks, both business and fun related. For example, you can hold a conference with your business partners, over the Internet, or you can chat with your friends online, instead of doing that on the phone. Of course, in order to enjoy accurate and high quality communication, you have to choose a good PC microphone. There is a huge variety of models on the market, ranging from microphones that you can buy for a few dollars and going all the way to expensive, high tech desktop microphones. So which PC microphone is right for you?

Price Vs Quality

You can pay $5 for a microphone, or you can pay $50. So where’s the difference, apart from the price? Well, cheap microphones have low prices for some good reasons: they offer average to low quality sound, they break down more easily and you can’t use them successfully in all applications that support a microphone. The materials they are manufactured from have to be cheap, which eliminates the idea of high quality, so the end product is of lower reliability. And at this price, you can be sure bulk manufacturing is present and quality tests are quick and far from rigorous. Microphones that come for a higher price have, in most cases, better sound quality and more features. Such microphones will have noise canceling filters, which help diminish background noise. Distortion filters and integrated circuits also help keep voice sounds clear and accurate. The materials used for more expensive microphones also last longer - plastic doesn’t crack so easily and if you drop it on the floor you know that the internal components are well protected.

Choosing the right computer microphone

Determining what price range you are in and what model to purchase depends heavily on the purpose you have in mind for the microphone. Are you going to use it just to chat with friends online? In that case, spending a lot of money on a professional computer microphone is not justified. Do you plan to hold business conferences over the Internet? Then maybe you should get a better microphone that will allow the discussion to be continuous and clear, without noise distortion. Giving vocal commands to your computer or dictating to word processing software with speech recognition capabilities is another use for desktop microphones. Quality should be first here - speech recognition software is very sensitive and demands a high quality microphone and sound card. Recording your voice and inserting it into music tracks is possible, but a high quality microphone is absolutely essential in this case.

Makes Cell Phones Ring at Airports

Posted by admin on 03 Apr 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware

International Terrorist and insurgents to detonate bombs to kill innocent people have used cellular phones. These devices could be used as partial components of weapons or in plots for aircraft suicide bombing missions as well. I propose a device in airport terminals, which will send out a harmonic test using directed sound as the carrier of the cell phone passes by. When the person says “hello, hello, hello” their voices are recorded against the NSA database of voices on their “watch list.” Additionally I propose that all bags on the conveyer belts also have a choke point, which is bomb resistant with a harmonic signal sent attempting to contact the phone. If a suicide bomber is on the plane and leaves his cell phone connected to a bomb underneath he could use this to detonate the bomb on the plane he is on, but if it goes thru a pre-detonation device system on the conveyor belt it will be eliminate and a disaster prevented.

Similarly if a cell phone does not ring then once the passenger comes up to the check in he will be further scrutinized and the phone checked to a larger degree, to insure it is not going to be used as a detonation device. If the phone does not ring; 1.) it is not a phone but rather a small bomb of plastic explosives or 2.) it is turned off and must be turned on and checked prior to boarding.

A harmonic pre-detonation device will either ring peoples phones or it will set off a bomb, which was meant to down an aircraft, kill innocent people and further propel the Al Queda message. Therefore a simple system can be installed to further protect the airline traveler without any additional due hardships on personal freedoms. Think on this.

Wireless Computer Network Rentals: The New Technology Trend

Posted by admin on 31 Mar 2009 | Tagged as: Living With Hardware

Consider the convenience and added benefits of renting today’s wireless technology.

Wireless networks have a big advantage over wired networks, especially for short term projects where the internet and rental computers, printers and projectors are deployed.

Wireless networks are easier and faster to setup than wired networks. Wireless devices add flexibility and save time. With wireless you can move your laptops, projectors and printers around and still maintain connectivity. Best of all, you don’t have to run cat5 wires to routers, computers, printers and switches.

Here are some of the wireless products that are commonly rented for company projects:

Wireless Router Rentals

A wireless router is a networking device that connects computers to the internet. With a router you can share an internet connection between multiple computers on the network. Note: The internet cable needs to be connected directly into the wireless router.

Rent Wireless Access Point (WAP)

A wireless access point is a networking device that allows wireless-equipped computers and other devices to communicate with a wired network. A WAP may also be used to expand the range of an existing wireless network.

Rent Wireless Adapters

A wireless adapter is a device that adds wireless network functionality to a computer or laptop. There are three types of wireless adapters. PCI Adapters are for desktop computers. As the name suggests, they can be installed in an available PCI slot. PCMCIA Adapters, also known as PC Cards, are for notebooks. Installation is as simple as pushing the card into an available PCMCIA slot. Lastly, there are USB Adapters. These adapters are compatible with desktop and notebook computers.

Rent Wireless Print Servers

A wireless print server connects a printer to the wireless network, allowing any computer on the network to wirelessly access the printer at any time.

Rent Wireless Projectors

A wireless projector allows a computer user to wirelessly connect and display the computer video on a screen. All you need is a wireless adapter in your computer or notebook and the software that comes with the projector. Today’s advanced wireless projectors allow one computer to connect to multiple projectors AND multiple computers to connect to a single projector.

If you want to have a really impressive presentation, consider renting two or more wireless projectors. Bring your multimedia presentation to the next level by putting on multiple unique screens of your data and video presentation. For example: have animation on one screen and data on another!

Another benefit of wireless projectors is having the ability to have multiple presenters displaying their presentations right from their own wireless laptop or computer. Consider a corporate meeting with presentations from finance, operations, sales and marketing managers.

Wireless projectors are available from 1800 Lumen and 800×600 resolution to 3000 Lumen and 1024×768 resolution.
